It is that magical time of year when America does not have any football and actually ventures outside. Spring Training has started and MLB begins in 3 weeks. Teams play 162 games and order is restored to the sports world. Go out to the ballpark, grab a beer and a hot dog and read this rant about America's favorite bat-oriented sport.
Baseball is a sport with no salary cap. The LA Dodgers are spending 215 million dollars to put 25 men on the field all season long. The Yankees are not far behind but this is the first season in years that the Yankees are not paying the most to attempt to buy a World Series ring.
There is no maximum level a team can spend but there should at least be a fucking minimum. The Houston Astros have a payroll of 25 million dollars for the entire team! And 5 million of that is being paid to Wandy Rodriguez who plays for the Pittsburgh Pirates. So really they are paying 20 million for their 25 guys. This makes the Royals and the Oakland A's look like they are spending money like an NBA Lottery pick.
The Yankees are literally dropping like flies. Mark Teixeira, Curtis Granderson, Derek Jeter, A-Rod, and Mauriano Rivera have been beaten down over the last two seasons. Call it Karma.
Josh Reddick of the Oakland A's has entered into a Beard-Off with WWE Wrestler Daniel Bryan. For the next calendar year, neither can shave or trim their already massive and manly facial hair. Hope that Reddick does not get traded to a team that does not allow facial hair.
The Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria has taken the throne of biggest scumbag in baseball from Commissioner Bud Selig. Do not get me wrong, Selig is still a royal scumbag. But Loria managed to get taxpayers in Miami to pay completely for their brand new stadium and brought in big name free agents like Jose Reyes and Mark Buehrle to get some asses into the seats and convince fans that management was willing to do whatever it takes to create a winning team. Then Loria traded/sold Reyes, Buehrle, Josh Johnson, and others to the Blue Jays. They replaced them with a couple of locker room cancers and Juan Pierre who is about 70 in baseball years. And Loria complains when fans rag on the team.
You have to feel bad for Giancarlo Stanton. The man can hit a baseball 500 feet against hurricane winds but he is pretty much being held as a prisoner by the Marlins and is one of the few baseball players who are underpaid.
It will be another year where White Sox DH Adam Dunn will either hit a home run, walk or strike out. He has no time for singles.
The Chicago Cubs have not won a World Series since 1908 and that will not change this year. Or next year. Maybe they will get one before I die.
See you on Opening Day.
