March 12th, only 6 months until the 2013 NFL season. Some sports analysts call this day "New Years Day". Why shouldn't they? This is the first milestone in the only sport that really matters. Baseball is great to watch, if the 4 teams that are good every year are one of your teams (mine are the Cubs, so baseball sucks ass). The NBA is a joke with only NBA Jam teams in contention, and if you like soccer....go kill yourself.
How could football fans not love this day? So many teams are only a few free agent signings away from making it to the first outdoor Super Bowl in New York. Several good teams, mostly bad, have a TON of cap room. Meanwhile, Jerry Jones is somewhere naked, wearing a cowboy hat burning dollar bills and fondling Tony Romo. This time is great and it's lightning fast. While writing this article, the Bills cut that Harvard grad that liked to throw to the other team. It's ok Fitz, you can always try to play for the Jets. They LOVE terrible QBs. The NFC West is engaged in an arms race at wide receiver. The Seahawks got Percy Harvin from the Vikings and the 49ers broke into John Harbaugh's house, kicked the dog, tied up the family, and stole Anquan Boldin for a 6th round pick?!?!? The Niners already had 15 picks in this year's draft. Getting picks for Alex Smith from the Cheifs gave the 49ers some huge trade bait since they don't have a lot of cap space.
Two teams that jumps out this off-season are the Indianapolis Colts and Cincinnati Bengals. Only the Browns have more cap space than the Bung-holes and Dolphins are barely above the Colts in cap room. The Colts and Bengals were both playoff teams and have lots of money to improve. Both teams have solid young QBs and WRs, but need to fill some gaps up and down the roster. With the money to do so, both clubs can easily improve their chances to hoist the Lombardi trophy. Mark my words, whoever wins the free agent battle between the Colts and Bengals will possibly move to a first round bye and lock home field advantage.
Colts need help in the trenches and to fill the void of Dwight Freeney. Adjusting to the 3-4 defense proved painful at times, but with a year under their belt look for the Colts to improve on D with a signing in the backfield. The Colts GM Grigson promises to "go heavy" for once in the team's history in Indy. Quentin Mikel, former IU alum may plug some holes? Ed Reed to play for Chuckstrong again? Speaking of Baltimore, OLB Kruger is perfect to fill Dwight's shoes but the shitty Browns have a little more cap space.
The Bengals......I don't give two shits about them.
