Its almost time for your fantasy football draft and I have a few pointers and eye-openers for you. I am not here to tell you about who I think is a sleeper or why you should take Arian Foster or LeSean McCoy or Ray Rice with the number one pick. People are paid to do that. I want to talk about what you should do with your league. Follow me to the land of Fantasy Football after the bump.
First, are you in a real league? I will give you a hint over whether you are in a real league. Did you draft at 2:15 on a Wednesday afternoon? Do you know anyone in the league? Did you pay money to enter the league? Is there a cash prize and/or trophy if you win? Does your league name contain the words "yahoo public# 435123?"
You pay to play. You want your friends to lose and then you take their money. You draft in a bar or living room with 9-12 of your friends. Real drafts do not start at 2:15 on a Wednesday. Those yahoo public leagues you are trying to win contain two guys with IT jobs just passing the time, a 12 year old home sick from school, 2 guys jerking off to anime while waiting for their turn, and your sad, pathetic ass.
If you are outside of the Top 4 draft spots, its time to start thinking about Quarterback (QB) or Wide Receiver (WR). Do you really want to spend a first round pick on Chris Johnson or Darren McFadden? Or do you want the powers of Aaron Rodgers or Calvin "Megatron" Johnson?
If you are not in a Points Per Reception League (PPR) talk to your commissioner and convince him to change his ways after he tells you stories of the '85 Bears. The NFL is a passing league. Teams that run the ball and play great defense are dying. Your fantasy team needs a gun-slinging QB who lights up the scoreboard and a few guys who catch everything thrown to them and then dance to the end zone. Before your draft, think to yourself, "would I want Tom Brady as my team's QB or Alex Smith?" Get the guy who puts up the points and get him early. The elite QBs will not make past the 2nd round. The good ones will be gone by the 6th. The elite WRs start going in the late 1st and entire 2nd rounds and are gone almost as fast.
Running Backs (RB) are a dying breed. There are 3 worth a top 10 pick. That is it. Ask the guy who drafted Jammal Charles last year how he feels about that pick. Then talk to the guy who drafted Darren Sproles in the 16th round. Which guy is happier? There are plenty of RBs who can be picked up in Rounds 4-10 and its the position with the most volatility. Laugh at the guys who take Steven Jackson or Frank Gore in the 3rd Round and thank them for their money.
And do not be the guy who drafts a kicker before the 2nd to last round. Kicker should be your final round pick and in no way deserves to be drafted earlier than 2nd to last. Consider it the 11th Commandment.
Draft well. Drink lots of beer. Talk major shit to your friends. Get together on Sundays and follow the game on your smartphones.
