College Movies

When I was young the world was still in-front of me. I was eager to believe Hollywood was honest and showing me the future. As such, I watched a lot of movies about college. I couldn't wait to go to college and pledge Delta Tau Chi. Once I got to college I realized just how important these films were to my growth into the mature adult I am now.

Here are 10 movies that should be required viewing for anyone about to enter college. They will ensure you get the full college experience.

0. Balls Out
Yeah, I'm starting with a "0". Sure this could be considered shameless shilling for my buddies movie. That doesn't take away from the fact it start future Ghostbuster Kate McKinnen, SNL hare to the digital short Beck Bennett, man of a thousand and one voices Jay Pharo, some chick from Twilight, and Life Time Achievement Award winner Clint Howard. Oh yeah, watch it (It's on Hulu) and thank me for the number "0"

1. Animal House
It may be a bit dated and it may seem cliche, but that's because every college movie since has ripped it off. Watch it and realize it's pure honesty about the college experience. In real life, Bluto is running for President.

2. Old School
This movie is necessary. Once you've been out of college for about 6 years, you're going to seriously consider finding a way to go back. Keep in mind I'm not saying that's a bad idea, I mean I spent 7 years in college for my BS.

3. PCU
Long before Jeremy Piven was Ari with fake hair, he was balding and Droz. This movie also brings you David Spade as the whinny prep-school douche he was born to play and a pre-director, post-Rudy, John Favreau. This film was made at the beginning of the PC movement we're knee deep in the shit of now. It also has the most accurate quote about college. "Classes, nothing before 11. Beer, it's your best friend you drink a lot of it. Women, you're a freshmen so it's pretty much out of the question."

4. Van Wilder
Remember what I said above about spending the better part of a decade in college? Well, maybe this movie hits a little close to home. Maybe I once went to pick up a copy of my transcripts and the clerk said "What are you? Ball States Van Wilder?" maybe my real-estate appraiser dad kept hearing stories about my house when he was working on other houses in the city. Maybe all of this is true. But my Indian friend is much smarter then Taj.

5. Road Trip
Yeah, this is a Tom Green movie. But only because Tom Green has a bit part. Anyway, Tom Green is a pretty great guy. You know how I know... I helped make THIS HAPPEN.
Road trips are an essential part of college. If you've not been on a college road trip, you've not been to college. Also, somehow the shit that happens in this movie is pretty real.

6. Revenge of the Nerds
I'm not going to spend much time telling you why you should see this movie, you just should. If nothing else it will teach you the importance of a good chant.

7. Swingers
No, this movie is not based in college. Nope, not even about college. It's post college. This dude gets his heart ripped out, goes to LA, and realized he's not a big bright star. But you know what? He grows up. And when you all grows up, you all grows up. This movie is so good we still give Vince Vaughn work and let it's director, John Favreau, direct Iron Man. Hell, it almost convinced the 90's to turn into the swing decade after Kurt had a shotgun breakfast.

8. Clerks
You thinking about not going to college? You think that's a good idea? Go ahead and study up on what you're in for

9. Accepted
Much like Old School, this movie doesn't get nearly the respect it deserves. You have super fat Jonah Hill, Justin Long back when everyone thought he was going to be a superstar, Lewis Black in a cameo, and a pre Gossip Girl Blake Lively. It's basically an updated Revenge of the Nerds but with a touch of originality (and ripping off of other college movies, but fuck off it's awesome).

10. Necessary Roughness
I wrote an entire thing about this and The Replacements being tied for the 10th spot before I remembered The Replacements is the same movie... but without college. So, this movie is freaking fantastic. Kathy Ireland at the height of her power, Scott Bakula fresh from Quantum Leaping, Sinbad, and Larry Miller doing his evil thing. A football program is busted by the NCAA (or whatever they're called in this) and the team has to reload, the right way. They get a rag tag group of misfits and a QB who's got one last year of elegability left in him. Can they do it? Why is there a chick playing foot ball (trust me that's not a typo, watch the movie)? Man so good.
